Lower School – Years 1 and 2

Laying solid foundations…

Children in Years 1 and 2 are carefully introduced to a broader curriculum which offers a rich and dynamic learning experience and many opportunities for high achievement. We seek to build self-confidence and independence, and embed the core skills which will underpin a child’s academic and future careers. Emphasis is placed on numerical reasoning and agility, fluency in reading and writing, memory and recall, and neat presentation. This is done in a sensitive, age-appropriate manner which is highly engaging and stimulating for our young learners. Our priority is to ensure that they find real enjoyment and fulfilment in learning and achieving.

Full-time class teachers and teaching assistants provide our small Key Stage 1 classes with highly individualised learning programmes and support, and subject specialist teaching is introduced for STEM, ICT, Art and Design, Spanish, Music, PE and Forest School. Year 2 children are introduced to Verbal and Non-verbal Reasoning, and PSHCE lessons are led by the Head of Pastoral Care.

Outside the classroom our children thrive on an increased range of activities which promote sound physical and mental health, develop deep and enduring interests, fire curiosity in the wider world, and facilitate the expression of individuality. Weekly swimming lessons begin in Year 1. Tennis coaching is provided by professional coaches from Edgbaston Priory Club. Regular visits are made to places of interest, making full use of our rich local environment and venturing further afield. There are also opportunities to participate in the School’s Pupil Leadership Team, and exciting co-curricular clubs are offered ranging from Yoga to Football, Mindfulness to Martial Arts.
