Today daily challenge themes are Numbers and Colours.

NUMBERS:

1. Can you hide a series of numbers (flashcards, toy numbers or written numbers) around the garden or house. Encourage your child to run and find all of the numbers and identify them as they do this. An extension of this would be to encourage them to put the numbers into order.

2. Draw a series of numbers on the pavement using chalk or use number flashcards and lay them out in the garden. Encourage your child to collect lots of sticks, stones etc. Support them to count out the correct amount of objecs to represent each number and lay them out next to the number. How many objects can they count out in sequence?

3. Turn a piece of cardboard into a ‘number car park’. Write numbers 1-5 or 1-10 dependant on ability in ‘car parkin spaces’ on the cardboard. Encourage your child to drive their car to different numbers when asked.

4. Can you use chalk to write numbers on the pavement. If your child is able to form numbers independently, allow them to do this themselves. Give them a bucket of water and a paintbrush and encourage them to write over the top of the numbers to practice number formation.

COLOURS:

5. On a piece of cardboard create a large rainbow using felt tips or paint or other creative resources (the children can help you to do this!). Alternatively this can be done on the pavement using chalks. Once dry, provide your child with a range of different toys/coloured objects and encourage them to match the objects up to the correct colour on the rainbow.

6. Create a series of coloured circles or your own colour flashcards with your child. Hide them arond the garden or in the house. Encourage them to run around to find the different colours and identify each colour as they find them.

7. Different coloured handprints – Allow your child to explore a series of coloured paints by painting their hands and making marks on paper. Older children could be encouraged to paint each hand a different primary colour, mix them together and see what colour they make. E.G one red hand and one yellow hand, print these on paper. Mix them together and print the new colour on paper. Label the colours. Red + Yellow = Orange

8. Can you hunt for different natural resources outdoors such as leaves, petals, sticks etc. Group them into different colours and stick them on to paper to make your own colourful nature collage.

9. Get messy with babies! Allow your child to explore different coloured paint using their hands and feed. Alternatively, provide them with different coloured paint and many different tools such as cars, utensils, brushes, leaves, animals to stamp in the paint etc. Emphasise on the colour names throughout the activity.

Enjoy!
